A dedicated, self-contained station for long-term, unattended deployment with integrated CO2/H2O gas analyzers, purpose-built for automated soil respiration (soil CO2 efflux) measurement. The optional CPY-5 canopy chamber extends it to net canopy CO2 flux on low vegetation.
The CFLUX-1 is a dedicated, self-contained system designed for long-term deployment and unattended operation, for both spatial and temporal analysis of soil respiration. With all key components built into a single station, there's no limit to where systems can be placed in the field.
Built-in CO2 & H2O Gas Analyzers
Each CFLUX-1 system has integral, accurate, non-dispersive infrared gas analyzers for CO2 and H2O. Two independent infrared gas analyzers in each system mean accurate measurement and fast response times regardless of where each unit is stationed — eliminating problems associated with long distances between chambers, analyzers and multiplexing devices. A robust, watertight enclosure protects the built-in gas analyzers, electronics and terminal block connections. Built-in Auto-Zero eliminates the need for field recalibration and delivers fast warm-up, adaptation to changing ambient conditions, and excellent stability and accuracy for both CO2 and H2O.
Soil Respiration Chamber
The large hemispherical chamber (2500 cm³) is designed to ensure uniform air mixing and accurate measurement of soil CO2 flux. An adjustable internal mixing fan, enabled or disabled on demand, enhances air circulation inside the chamber, while a unique venting system balances pressure between chamber air and ambient air. A power-efficient actuator and electronics control the opening and closing of the chamber at user-defined intervals, and four user-adjustable legs allow easy deployment in the field.
Soil Moisture & Temperature
The CFLUX-1 has one SDI-12 input and one analog input (0–1V) for use with commercially available sensors, so soil moisture and temperature can be measured and recorded alongside flux data. The Stevens HydraProbe II is available as an optional plug-and-play sensor for this purpose (sold separately).
WiFi & Data Storage
An onboard WiFi access point lets you set up and monitor the system remotely from a phone or computer; connected to a local computer with a router, the system can be monitored from anywhere in the world with internet access. Data and sensor information are stored directly to a USB flash drive, with an external data logger also easily supported if needed.
Expanded Range for High-CO2 Environments
The CFLUX-1 can be calibrated up to 30,000 ppm for soil CO2 flux measurements in high-CO2 environments such as volcanic areas.
Optional Accessory: CPY-5 Canopy Assimilation Chamber
Fitted with the optional CPY-5 canopy assimilation chamber (167 cm² exposed area), the CFLUX-1 can also measure net canopy CO2 flux on low vegetation — letting the same platform family cover both soil respiration and low-canopy net CO2 exchange.
Comparison with the EGM-5 Soil Respiration Set
Our EGM-5 Soil Respiration Set (SRC-2), already on our site, is ideal for portable, hand-held, rapid field-survey measurements. The CFLUX-1, by contrast, is built for fixed, unattended, long-term monitoring — it serves a different use case within the same product family rather than replacing the EGM-5.
