A computer-controlled laboratory instrument that measures soil's tendency to shear under vertical and horizontal stress.
This instrument measures soil's tendency to shear under both vertical and horizontal stress. The set is highly useful in investigations prior to the construction of railways, large and heavy structures, or other engineering applications that load the ground.
While shearing is performed at a constant shear rate under consolidated-drained (CD), unconsolidated-undrained (UU) or unconsolidated-drained (UD) conditions, matric potential and shear forces are measured simultaneously at a given vertical stress.
The instrument operates fully automatically and under computer control, using multi-functional software that applies measurement protocols and visualizes the data. Samples are taken in standard soil sample rings measuring Ø103 x 100 mm with a volume of 235 cc.
